I am delighted to have 2 mixed media cyanotype prints selected for this exhibition, at Edinburgh Printmakers, Castle Mills, Edinburgh.
Cànan na tìre seo (The language of this land) I & II
The theme is “Hope” (Dòchas in Gaelic). Both of the works I am exhibiting are mixed media cyanotype varied edition, prints created here on the Isle of Lewis, under the Hebridean sun-light. I call this work, landscape-engaged. I am interested in depicting the landscape on the Isle of Lewis, by engaging with it, not just looking at it and so the fact I am using flora and fauna collected here on the island is important.
The work relates to the exhibition theme of ‘Hope’ in it’s ability to draw our attention to the importance of ecology and the detail of the environment around us. I am interested in the flora and fauna that grows wildly in the machair and on the verges of roads in the Outer Hebrides. I work with specimens that are believed to have medicinal qualities. All of my titles are bi-lingual as I am a Gaelic learner and the calligraphic, slight illegible writing and title of the prints are pointing to the universality of language and importance of the Gaelic language to the island and community I live in.
I am also delighted that EP have a bi-lingual title for this exhibition which runs from 29 Nov -16 March 2025. Admission is free.
